1995 Spring Chapter Meeting: The ASA Colorado-Wyoming Chapter Annual Spring Meeting will be held on Friday May 5,
1995 In Boulder, CO at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) As in the past, presentations are limited to twenty-five minutes including discussion. There will also be the usual student session, contingent upon a sufficient number of submitted papers. Deadlines: April 25, 1995 - Student papers Send to: Jack Wang Keynote Speaker: Arthur P. Dempster, Ph.D., Harvard University Keynote Address: Models, Modeling, and the Principle of Complementarity Arthur P. Dempster, Department of Statistics, Harvard University Abstract: By "Principle of Complementarity" I mean Bohr's idea that pairs of
concepts defining corresponding positions that might be seen as distinct or in conflict
can often be regarded as coexisting elements of a larger picture. Four basic
complementarities that affect statistical practice, and that interact both within and
among pairs are: Explicit recognition of these and other complementarities can help to clarify and systematize discussions of what statistical practice is about. In my talk I will analyze the interactions among several complementary pairs, and apply the analysis to explanations of what models are and to related matters of model choice and model dependence.
