Winter Meeting - March 4, 1999

Speaker: Dr. Vijay Nair

Topic: Statistics in Advanced Manufacturing: Beyond the Shewhart Paradigm

University of Colorado at Denver 4:30 - 5:00 P.M. Social time

1250 14th Street (1/2 block from Larimer Square) 5:00 - 6:00 P.M. Presentation

Denver, Colorado 6:30 - ?:?? P.M. Informal dinner

Room 490 (Updated 2/23/99)

Dr. Vijay Nair is a member of the Department of Statistics and Department of Industrial & Operations Engineering University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

Synopsis

The traditional approach to statistical process control, as developed by Shewhart in the 1920's, focuses on process monitoring and change-point detection. There has been little emphasis on the development of statistical methods for failure diagnostics and process improvement. There is a critical need for such methods in advanced manufacturing industries where a considerable amount of in-process and product quality data are now being collected routinely. These data contain useful information that can be exploited for improving the processes. This talk will outline a statistical framework for intelligent manufacturing and use some real applications from the automotive and semiconductor industries to describe the research issues. In particular, methods for identifying spatial patterns of defects will be discussed.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Trevor Hastie of Stanford University has agreed to be the keynote speaker at the spring meeting. Dr. Hastie has written many books and articles on the topics of modern regression and classification methods, including topics such as Generalized Additive Models, Flexible Discriminant Analysis, and Adaptive Discriminant Nearest Neighbors.

The meeting will be held at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) building in Boulder in the main seminar room. Registration will start at 8:30 AM. Trevor Hastie’s talk will kick off the meeting at 9:00 AM. A student paper competition will be held following Dr. Hastie’s keynote address. The length of the meeting will be determined by the number of papers presented.

Jim zumBrunnen has prepared an informative entry on the chapter’s web page. The section includes maps to the NCAR building, information on NCAR, an advanced registration form and access to Trevor Hastie’s home page.

Chapter News

Sponsored High School

Cherry Creek High School is one of the area schools sponsored by the local chapter. Cherry Creek offers a general probability/statistics course first semester as a prerequisite for an Advanced Placement Statistics course in the spring. Last spring CCHS students did very well on the AP Stat Exam. Twenty-three out of twenty-four students who took the exam scored a 3 or higher. The table shows the AP scoring, along with the distribution achieved by the CCHS students as compared to the national average.

Score # CCHS students National %

5 extremely well qualified 6 (25.0%) 13.4%

4 well qualified 9 (37.5%) 21.3%

3 qualified 8 (33.3%) 24.6%

2 possibly qualified 1 (4.2%) 18.7%

1 no recommendation 0 21.9%

CCHS teacher Jim Luhring reports that they also did a poster competition this fall. Jim thanks the ASA for its support. He was able to attend the Westco Conference in the spring of 98 in Colorado Springs. He also uses the publications from ASA in his classes, sharing articles with students from AMSTAT NEWS, STATS, and CHANCE magazines.

Maurice Davies Memorial Awards

Awards are available for outstanding statistics majors from schools in the chapter area, in honor of Maurice Davies, a founder of the chapter. One undergraduate or graduate student from a school may receive an award. The award carries with it a one-year student membership in the American Statistical Association. If a department desires to present such an award, please send the name of the student to the chapter president by March 15, 1999.

Member Activities

Roger W. Johnson has been an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ("Tech") since the fall of 1996. Among other courses he has taught introductory statistics, engineering statistics, and stochastic processes since coming to Tech and enjoys using hands- on activities and real data in the classroom. His recent publication Earth's surface water percentage? (Teaching Statistics , vol.19, no.3, pp. 66-68) discusses estimating the percentage in question by tossing an inflatable globe around in the classroom. Johnson's other recent publication How does the NFL rate passers" (The UMAP Journal , vol.18, no.2, pp. 143-164) describes how least-squares may be used to uncover the formula the NFL uses to compute passer rating, and discusses some elementary perturbation theory as well. See Roger's homepage, at URL http://silver.sdsmt.edu/~rwjohnso, for other hands-on activities and links to real data sets.

Shortly after our last issue was mailed, we received a note from out past president, Jim Rutledge.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the CO-WY ASA president for the past year. The year

went by very fast and I had a great time. I would like to especially thank the other chapter officers. Bill, Jack, Jim, Joan, Karen, and Snehalata - thank you for all your help and support. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage other chapter members to get involved as a chapter officer. When I agreed to be the president-elect, I was very apprehensive about the amount of work that would be involved. I quickly learned that the other chapter officers would work together so that no one person would become overwhelmed. The best part about being a chapter officer is that you get the opportunity to meet new people. I found this to be the most rewarding aspect about being involved in the chapter. Even though I have moved to Ohio, the CO-WY chapter will always hold a special place in my heart."

Membership Dues

Please check you mailing label. The date on the right side shows when your membership in the local chapter expires. Colorado-Wyoming Chapter annual dues are $5.00 per year for regular members and $2.00 per year for student members. You may pay chapter dues through ASA headquarters along with your society dues, OR you may pay them directly to the chapter treasurer. National membership is not a prerequisite for membership and participation in chapter activities.

Please Note: paying the chapter directly results in the chapter getting the whole $5 vs. $4 if it is sent to ASA national headquarters.

A dues payment form is on the back of this page. Please make checks payable to CO-WY ASA. Payments should be mailed to our treasurer at the following address:
