| ABSTRACT |
Two of the most predominant technological trends over the past two decades have been a reduction in hardware size and an increase in data storage and transfer rates. The result of these trends has been an explosion of mobile communications devices, with a subsequent requirement of monitoring, locating, and tracking such devices. However, with mobility, uneven terrain, and atmospheric conditions comes uncertainty in location estimates. To compensate, various statistical methods have been developed to accurately estimate where a mobile device may be. The purpose of this project is to implement a Newton-like method for estimating position based upon noisy distance estimates, followed by an examination of several smoothing techniques that may be applied to the resulting position estimates.
