My dissertation topic of many years ago dealt with assessment of reliability through life testing. I have recently begun new research in this area. While ongoing burn-in of electrical components, say, is really only another form of mass inspection, sometimes it is necessary. Of course, in the long run, improvements in the components should lead to less and less dependence on this form of inspection. Here are a couple of articles which deal with life testing.
