The Air Bed Tire Test by Zube (zube@stat.colostate.edu) Created: Sep 25, 2011 Updated: Sep 25, 2011 http://www.stat.colostate.edu/~zube/air.txt While shopping for a new bed, you might consider an air bed and eventually decide that it is the answer to all your sleep prayers. Take my advice. Before you buy one and spend a ridiculous amount of money on plastic, foam, rubber, air and a compressor, do the following: 1) buy a new automobile tire 2) put the tire right next to your bed, taking care that you get a whiff of the new tire smell with every breath 3) go to sleep If you wake up in the morning feeling happy and well-rested, an air bed might be for you. On the other hand, if you wake up with a wicked headache and the room is spinning from all the chemical fumes you've been inhaling for the past eight hours, you might consider sticking to a normal bed. While normal beds also release gases when they are new, they are *nothing* like the toxic cloud that we inhaled yesterday. My wife got the worst of it and she is still suffering. Even dumping it in the cellar wasn't enough. We had to wrap the bits up in plastic and tape them shut to be able to function in our house again. So much for that pile of cash. So, please do the Air Bed Tire Test before you buy an air bed. The money you save may be your own.
