[From Brett Glass' column, Infoworld Sept 23, 1996] Q: I am running Borland Paradox 7 for Windows 95/NT on my machine and need to retreive data from a client's Microsoft Access database file. Paradox is compatible with Microsoft ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) standard. However, when I tried to install the 32-bit ODBC driver from Microsoft's FTP site, I was informed that I need to have Microsoft Access or one of several other Microsoft programs, installed in order to do so. Is there a work-around for this? A: I've contacted Borland International Inc., and its representatives have informed me that although Paradox 7 can connect with ODBC drivers via an ODBC "socket," Microsoft Corp will not allow Borland to actually distribute an ODBC driver with a product; you must get the driver from Microsoft. And, as you've discovered, when you attempt to use the driver that's posted on Microsoft's Web site, it wont work unless you have shelled out money for one of several Microsoft products, most of which are directly competitive with Borland's products.
