Requesting Class Accounts for Weber 205/206 Newest stuff: Class accounts will take slightly longer to make this semester, as we're starting anew with MATHSTAT3. If you request an account *with* a class directory, please tell me if you want any of the old files that were previously in the class directory on MATHSTAT2 put back. Otherwise, you'll get a clean slate. ***** If you need a class account for Weber 205/206, please mail me with the following info: class name (e.g. st204 or m161) how many sections there are (if you are requesting an account for only a specific section, please tell me which section) whether or not you need a class directory to put things in A class directory is for instructors to drop files into so that students can access them. Instructors will normally be able to do anything to the files in the class directory but students can only read them. Rules: Class accounts are disabled on the Friday of Finals Week at 4:45pm. If your class account needs to be active past this date, please mail me sometime *far* in advance so that I do not turn it off. The EOL for any extension is the Tuesday after Finals Week at noon (when grades are due). Accounts will be turned off immediately in the case of hacking, a security problem or the like. To date, I have not had to do this to any class account for these reasons. ** New and Fairly New Stuff Begins Here ** Windows 7 notes: This is Year Two of the Windows 7 era. The 40 newest machines (STATPCSxx / MATHPCSxx / STATPCRxx / MATHPCSxx) all run Windows 7 64-bit. The two biggest differences for your students are: a) There is an automatic logout after 40 minutes of inactivity time that actually seems to work. The instructor machines at the front do not have the automatic logout set. b) When logging into the machine, there is no DOMAIN box. By default, the machines log into the MATHSTAT3 domain. If you need to log into the STAT3 or MATH3 domain, your must use STAT3\username or MATH3\username for the username. As usual, due to time constraints, the new machines have not been extensively tested. Please let me know if you see any new issues. Projector notes: The instructor machines and the projectors were both replaced in the summer of 2012. If you will be using the projector in either classroom, please read the following: http://www.math.colostate.edu/FAQ/weber205206.projector.txt There is also a link on the desktop to that file so you can review it while you are in the lab. SAS notes: SAS is installed on 5 machines in Weber 206. If the rows are numbered right to left (5 4 3 2 1) and the seats are numbered front to back, then the machines with SAS are: 2,1 3,2 3,3 3,4 5,4 Please review the following notes: 0) I will distribute the passwords to you in person. 1) The best way to distribute the password to your students is to write it on the board, wait a short time and then erase it. Do not leave passwords on the board nor distribute passwords via email. In all cases, the domain must be MATHSTAT2 for class accounts to work. 2) Please test the passwords before you give them out to your students. 3) Please tell your students: a) to log off when they are done using the computers b) to not to give the class password to anyone and to not be careless with it. If I find a password written down somewhere in public (on a whiteboard, on a piece of paper I find in the hall, etc.), I'll have no choice but to change the password. I do this about five times a semester and is a grand bother for all involved. c) that the lab closes promptly at 4:45pm or so on Fridays (mod a small bit of overrun time for any Friday 4pm class). It also closes at 4:45pm during the first week and finals week. 4) If you decide to put things in the class directory for your students to use, please *copy* the files. Do not *move* the files or your students will probably be unable to access them. 5) If you are placing files in your class directory (g:\somedir), you should tell your students to copy whatever they need from g:\somedir to the local directory under the c:\temp directory first (c:\temp\mydir), rather than working on the files directly. Finally, the FAQ for the lab is here: http://www.stat.colostate.edu/~zube/lab.html Let me know if you have any questions. Zube
