Stat Department Computing FAQ

1) For questions, problems or further details on any of these entries,
please mail Zube@stat.colostate.edu.  If you are mailing from an
non-CSU address, please put "CSU Stat question" in the subject line
if it's the first time emailing me.

1a) If you are reporting a problem, please provide all relevant
details.

2) If you are a faculty or postdoc running an up-to-date version of
Windows, MacOS or Linux, you can be connected to the wired private
network.  This may be faster than the wireless and you'll always be
able to print from the wired network.

3) For grads, there are four ways to print to the printers in the
basement and the third floor:

a) From one of the few remaining public desktop machines (you'll need
an account to log in)

b) Via the USB cable connected to the printer

c) Via the USB port on the front of the printer

d) Via CSU-Net wireless.  If you want to do this, please mail me and
tell me if you are in the basement or on the third floor and what
kind of machine you have (Win or Mac) and what OS you are running.
I'll send instructions back to you.  Caveat:  if HP stops releasing
patches for the printers, wireless printing will be discontinued
until we buy new printers.

4) If you want an account on the Windows side (this allows you to
login on the two stat public Windows machines on the third floor)
please mail me.  Windows network (e.g: j:, k: drive) files are backed
up every night

5) Your mail address is a @colostate.edu address.  Once you have a NetID,
go to https://portal.office.com and log in with NetID@colostate.edu.
That is your CSU email.  You can also obtain a Google-branded CSU
account by going to https://mail.rams.colostate.edu/create.aspx and
following the instructions.

6) If you are a faculty or postdoc and wish to buy a Mac, the purchase
must go through the Ramtech store (ramtech.colostate.edu).  You can

If you wish to buy a PC, you must buy an HP through Kuali (CSU's
ordering system), although if you prefer another brand, you can also
submit a waiver to Jim Cox (the CNS computer guy).  If he approves the
waiver, he'll send it along to Purchasing, who must also approve it.

8) I have extra keyboards and mice (old USB, so you'll need a hub),
monitors (usually non-HDMI, so you'll have to buy a converter to VGA,
DVI or DP) and power strips available for your stat desk or for home.
You can keep them for as long as you like, but you must return them
before leaving the department.
