ST201 Policies

Attendance:

Attendance and participation in recitations and lectures account for 2% of of the available extra credit. Attendance is not mandatory. However, past experience had shown that students who attend class on a regular basis tend to perform better than those who do not. There are also situations where slight modifications may be made to the syllabus. Consistent attendance will help you stay current. Certainly, lecture content will give you an indication of the topics that will be emphasized on exams.

Exams:

There are currently 4 exams scheduled. (See syllabus). Please be in class promptly as they are expected to take the entire 50 minutes. If you have an UNAVOIDABLE conflict please let me know prior to the exam so that arrangements can be made.

Make-Up Exams, Extra Credit, and Curves:

There are no make-up exams. The exam dates are advertised in the class syllabus. They will be announced at least 1 week prior to their administration. Please plan your time accordingly.

Extra credit (EC): You can receive up to 5% of additional credit towards your final grade by participating in class and completing weekly assigned EC exercises. These will be announced on Tuesdays and they will be due into your lab instructor by the beginning of lab on Friday. These must be submitted in person. No other submission formats will be accepted. If you will not be able to attend your regularly scheduled lab section on a particular Friday but want to turn in EC work, please have a colleague hand it in for you.

There are no curves! Please see the grading scale below.

Incompletes:

The grade of incomplete ("I") is given ONLY when extenuating circumstances beyond the student's control render the student unable to satisfactorily complete class work. Examples of this work include but are not limited to assignments, labs, quizzes, exams, and term papers.

The student must be performing at a passing level at the time these circumstances occur. In other words, incompletes will NOT be recorded for students who are failing. For example, a student contracts mononucleosis which puts him in the hospital and then home for the last 4 weeks of the semester. If the student was passing up until he got sick then he is eligible for a grade of incomplete. If he was failing then a grade of "F" is recorded.

Incompletes are NOT recorded for students who are eligible to withdraw from the course. Check the current class schedule for the last day to withdraw from a class with a grade of "W".

Academic Honesty:

The university expressly prohibits academic dishonesty such as cheating, plagiarism, etc. It provides for a number of rather unpleasant consequences for students who are caught in violation of its academic honesty policies. As far as STCC201 goes, there should be no communication between you during exams or quizzes. This includes sharing of materials such as calculators.

Absences due to work or School Functions:

I realize that many of you are not only enrolled in STCC201 but, you are also involved in other functions. Intercollegiate sports and other CSU programs often require a student to be away. Full or part time employment might also demand this of some of you. I fully understand the need/desire to work while attending school. I can truly appreciate the amount of organization required to keep your lives in order. It wasn’t that long ago that I was doing the same thing. I also believe that students can benefit tremendously from involvement in school related activities above and beyond traditional class work. If your activity or work requires you to be away from class please inform me at least one week in advance of your absence. This enables me to make necessary arrangements for your situation. Please inform your supervisor, coach, or the person in charge of your activity of this policy.

Harassment:

As an instructor at CSU, I will do my absolute best to insure that this classroom environment is free from any form of harassment. You have a right to expect an environment, which is conducive to learning; and I have a right to expect an environment, which is conducive to teaching. It is my sincere desire to provide for each student regardless of gender, race, or lifestyle an equal voice in the class. Any student who feels harassed is encouraged to report this to another appropriate person or me.

Philosophy:

This is your class!! If you have a pet interest that you would like to see addressed, please let me know. Statistics is a powerful tool that you will use long after you leave STCC201. It can be both fun and fascinating and I hope to instill in you some of the excitement that I have for the subject.
